What does success look like for today’s working mother?

Work/life balance is a biggie, because as they say “all work and no play, makes Jane a dull working Mum.” For some people this looks like a hard-and-fast separation between work and family life – but, for others, it’s about how to harmoniously blend the two together.

So, what’s the secret to work/life success? We tried boiling it down to two key factors.

Flexible working arrangements:

Since the great Covid work-from-home experiment, many more companies are taking advantage of the fact that this type of work can actually increase productivity. Check job ads and you’ll see that a lot of packages include some kind of WFH framework. In fact, job board seek.com.au had over 36,000 work-from-home jobs advertised in April 2022.

As a working Mum, this is a great opportunity to find some balance — working from home while you manage the lives of your children. Because it’s so common now, it can be easier to ask your current employer about flexible work arrangements — or bring it up in a job interview.

A good working environment is key to being able to work from home, especially if you still have kiddos with you during the day. To help you get set up with your home office, Gimmie has some great work-from-home products, like the latest office furniture and chairs, computers and tablets, monitors, digital storage, printers and computer accessories. With our flexible payment options, it means you can get your WFH on now, and budget for the expense over the long term.

But flexible working isn’t just about working from home – it can include negotiating with your employer around working hours that fit in with your family’s schedule (for example, working around school drop off and pick up times). It might look like working longer hours, but fewer days a week, or working weekends when your loved ones can look after your little ones.

There’s no one size fits all when it comes to what works for families — it’s important to understand what your needs are and discuss your options with your employer.

Time Management:

Getting the most from your life depends a lot on time management. The more organised you can be, the more time you’ll have for yourself — and one of the best ways to manage your time is with meal preparation. By cooking or preparing food ahead of time, with larger portions divided up for dinners and school lunches, you can save time throughout the week to pamper yourself — take a bath, light a scented candle and pop some headphones on, or listen to your favourite albums. You might also find some more time to hit the gym, or just work out from home, with some awesome fitness equipment you can pick up from Gimmie.

Meal planning or meal prepping is another fantastic way to help with managing your time  Slow cookers and pressure cookers are the perfect way to plan ahead with your meals, and with winter coming, they’re amazing for whipping up a bulk batch of soup or stew. Save time with quick healthy meals whizzed up in a food processor, or cooked in minutes with an air fryer – however you like to use your chef skills, you’ll find plenty of options in our Kitchen & Home Appliances section.

Planning is the key to work/life balance, just as planning is the key to managing your money. You can do both with Gimmie — planning for a better lifestyle now, with the flexibility of paying over 1 or 2 years!
