OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode, which essentially means that the LEDs produce their own light instead of using a backlit screen which is what you find in the standard LED TV. Because each pixel produces its own light, the picture quality is greatly enhanced along with various other benefits.

Previously, the best OLED TV would set you back a lot of money compared to even the highest quality LED TVs. This made it hard for people to upgrade when the pricetag was so extreme and the difference in quality was marginal.

Nowadays the price of OLED Televisions has come down substantially making it a much more realistic choice for those looking for an upgrade.

Picture Performance

When it comes to the quality of pictures being produced, OLED models of TVs take the cake. This is due to the ability of these TVs being able to turn each individual pixel off. This allows, what is known as true black, to be obtained which enhances contrast ratios and produces excellent picture quality.

Brightness

The individual LEDs are capable of producing an extremely bright light, which is more than ideal for watching your favourite movies. This, accompanied by the ability to produce deep blacks, helps to enrich colours and brightness.

Energy Efficient

The standard LED TV requires a backlight to alter the brightness of the picture being showed. This uses a lot more energy than OLED screens, which do not need a backlight and power each pixel individually. These LEDs are already exceptionally energy-efficient and don’t use nearly as much power as typical LED screens.

Thickness

Another benefit of OLED screens is that they don’t require a backlight, meaning that they can be extremely thin. Take, for example, the OLED W from LG, which has a thickness of just 4mm.

This means you can increase the screen size of your TV and not worry about whether it will be too heavy to be wall-mounted.

Wider Viewing Angle

Unlike LED TVs, the viewing experience does not diminish depending on where you are sitting on the couch. Standard LED screens require you to sit dead centre for the best viewing experience, whereas OLED screens allow much greater angles of viewing before the quality starts to worsen.

How long will an OLED TV last?

Estimates vary between brands. For example, Sony has said their OLED models have lifespans of around 4-6 years with continuous use. LG has said that their products will last around 30,000 hours, which is equivalent to 5 hours a day for 17 years.

Is an LG OLED TV better for my eyes than a regular TV?

Research has found that OLED screens found in LG TVs produce nearly half of the amount of blue light found in the highest quality of LCD TVs. This fact, as well as there being no backlight, means that this type of TV is better on the eyes.

How do I choose the best OLED TV for me?

There are several great options on the market from various brands. It is best to look at what has the best reviews and see if the features match what you are looking for.

What are the best OLED TVs for gamers?

There are lots of OLED screens specifically designed for gamers but the 4k hdr LG C1 OLED is a favourite. It is capable of supporting Dolby Vision and boasts auto low latency mode with a variable refresh rate. The sound quality is also great making it one of the best OLED screens on the market.

Are there any disadvantages to owning an OLED TV?

The main downside is the increased price you pay to own one. However, these costs have reduced substantially over the years making purchasing a new TV a much smaller commitment.
